Jade

Malaysian "jade" necklace As I was going through my mom's jewelry box one of her necklaces really caught my eye. After asking her about it, I found out it was a lavender Malaysian jade necklace. Not only did the exotic name appeal to me but so did it's beauty. Upon receiving the assignment of creating a blog about East Asian art and culture one of the first things that popped into my mind was this necklace. Mainly because I always associated Chinese culture with jade. My math professor from China wears a jade bracelet and the jade exhibit at The Field Museum of Natural History associates with almost exclusively Chinese culture and so many other places make the connection between the two. However I never knew the reason why; I just didn't question it. Doing future research I unfortunately found out Malaysian jade isn't real jade, it's dyed quartzite. Despite this fact I still acquired a lot of knowledge of real jade and how it relates to Chinese cul...

Ramen

Outside of Raijin Ramen Me eating ramen After I visited Hawaii in 2017 and had the best ramen of my life I made it a goal to find a ramen place in Tucson that I loved. August 28th I did exactly that. My suitemate was battling a nasty cold and I offered to take her to get food off campus and we chose Raijin Ramen for dinner that night. Miso ramen Edamame Melon Ramune What I ate (left to right): Miso ramen Melon Ramune Edamame We first started off sharing an order of edamame (steamed soy beans with sea salt) and they went in seconds . Thankfully once I finished I got my order of Ramune (or as I used to call it, Japanese soda) and was able to indulge in something until I got my order. My initial reaction to the miso ramen was how good it was. In general I LOVE noodles in all forms: pho, ramen, spaghetti, etc. so I would have been happy no matter what was placed in front of me. What I really enjoyed about this restaurant that I hadn't experienced in Hawai...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doraemon_(2005_anime) http://scoop.previewsworld.com/Home/4/1/73/ 1016?articleID=176644 I was 5 the first time I went to Malaysia and one of my most prominent memories was watching TV at my grandparents' house. The show that I remember watching to this day was Doraemon. Maybe it was the catchy theme song that I find myself to this day humming or the strange robotic cat and his human friend that caused this show to leave a huge imprint on my childhood. Doraemon is a popular Japanese manga turned into an anime aimed towards kids. Growing up the plot always confused me but thankfully Wikipedia understands it A LOT better than I do. To summarize the 26 year long series, Doraemon is a robot cat sent back in time from the 22nd century to aid a young boy, named Nobita Nobi, doing poorly in school and being bullied. Every episode Doraemon helps him with a problem he has by created a gadget through his magical pocket. In America we h...
