Buddha

Buddha Figurines In my room I have various forms of small Buddha statues or figurines. I will admit I bought all of these for the aesthetic aspect of it, as I am not a Buddhist however when I look at them closer I realize many of them were created and sold solely for the aesthetic purpose as a practicing Buddhist would probably not buy these. As we learned in class Buddha is traditionally not depicted laughing or smiling but instead commercialism changed him/her to that. On top of that authentic Buddhist worship pieces are rarely sold for money as that goes against the values of Buddhists to end suffering, and buy feeling the need to purchase items such as these you are feeding into your own personal worldly desires. On this blog  the writer discusses how it's similar to people having statues of Jesus Christ in your home and not being a Christian. Although the idea of Buddha decorations is appealing, by purchasing Buddha figurines you're doing the exact opposite of what B...

Death Note

https://gamesforgirlsss.com/death-note-anime-characters-and-ending-explained/ In high school I promised my friends I would try to get into anime, as they all were avid anime watchers. My perception of anime was very set and I was only willing to watch "entry level" anime and allowed my friends to choose from there. The show they chose was Death Note, which at the time could be accessed through Netflix. Death Note  is a manga series that was turned into an animated series to be aired on television, originally in Japanese which was then dubbed into English. Netflix then did it's own adaptation on the show and created an American movie. The general plot of Death Note  is a high school student, Light Yagami, finds a notebook titled "Death Note" along with instructions. The instructions inform Light how he is able to now control the fate of people. The notebook comes with something else, a shinigami who accompanies Light until the day he dies. In Japanese cultu...

Tae Kwon Do

http://portsmouthunitkd.blogspot.com/p/sparring.html Almost every country has a national sport that they take immense pride in. For the United States its baseball, for many European countries its soccer (football) and for many Asian countries its a type of martial art. In South Korea, by law, the national sport is Tae Kwon Do, a form of martial arts that is also an olympic event. For two years I did Tae Kwon Do and during this time I was my fittest. Sparring and pumsae (form) were the two main focuses the time I was there and in a poorly air conditioned room it was easy to work very hard. Sparring consisted of "fighting" someone close to your weight and the determination of who won the match was based on a point system. Certain kicks in certain spots gave various amounts of points (determined by a judge) and at the end of the match they would be totaled to see who had the most and could take the title of "winner." In pumsae, there were various forms you would...

Chinese Zodiac

Year of the rabbit pendant My grandma, born in the year of the dragon, next to the dragon statue at  The Thean  Hou Temple Growing up I never knew much about Chinese zodiac except for how it directly pertained to me. I knew that I was born in the year of the rabbit and that my brothers were born in the year of the snake and sheep/goat. I also knew that my grandfather and my mother would argue about whether or not her birthday fell on the year of the dragon or the year of the rabbit, as her birthday is in January. I remember being younger and my mom telling me the reason why my youngest brother was stubborn was because he is born in the year of the goat or that my parents were compatible because of their zodiac. In Chinese culture the zodiac is significant for many reasons. It was used as a way to date years in the cycle and the zodiac is an important aspect of stories passed down from generation to generation. Every animal within the zodiac h...
